Abstract :

Morphotectonic evidence along the Siah kuh fault shows this fault is active. Faulted Quaternary deposits, deflected and offset streams, bisected alluvial fans and high fault scarps in Quaternary deposits reveal that the Siah kuh fault has been active during the Quaternary. In central part of the fault, the scarp reaches the height of ~75m and lateral offset is ~3km. The Siah kuh fault belongs to the Shahrud fault system and has a dominant left-lateral slip. In addition, the Siah kuh fault coincides with an aeromagnetic lineament known as F-429, indicating that the morphotectonic features only suggest the youngest slips on the fault. N-S compression is believed to be responsible for left-lateral slips on the faults in this part of the NE Iran. Thus, it seems that the Siah kuh fault is a basement fault which is supposed to slip left-laterally due to the N-S compression.
