Abstract :
In this study base of Paleocene-Eocene deposits have been studied around Birjand. The base of theses deposits is unconform that associate with a conglomerate sequence and in some localities overlay ophiolite complex. In limestone beds of the studied sections representative species of the following genera (foraminifera) Alveolina, Assilina, Coskinolina, Discocyclina, Flosculina, Globorotalia, Glomalveolina, Lokhartia, Millola, Miscellanea, Nummulites, Rotalia, Operculina, Quinqueloculina, Sakesarina, Somalina and Subterraniphyllum thomasi, Lithophyllum sp., Lithothamnium sp., (Bryozoan and algae) are identified.
Based on assemblage fauna and stratigraphic position a Paleocene – Eocene age for exposures in north Birjand and Late Paleocene – Eocene age in south Birjand is suggested for base of these deposits. The lithology and fossil contents indicate a shallow environment deposition that was effected by uplifiting and settlement ofophiolitic complex. Lithological changes could suggest an increase in depth, subsidence and age from south to north of the area.
