Abstract :

The study area is located between two mountain chains with north-west terend in Jovien in the north of Sabzevar (Khorasan Razavi provience). Ophiolites make the southern topography, which could be a source for contamination of ground water to Cr. In order to investigate this possibility, 22 samples from ground water collected. The amount of the Cr is very variable in the samples and in many cases it is more than WHO standard limit of 50 μg/lit which means that the water is contaminated to Cr. The patterns of the distribution of the Cr are not similar through the area. In the northern parts the amount of the Cr is high in some cases; it is two times greater than standard value. Jovin aquifer present two layers in the northern part, but it has only one layer in the southern part. Contaminated water to Cr originated from the lower layer, which could be in touch with ophiolites.
