Abstract :
Sulfate, calcium, and sodium enter into the groundwater through various sources. The common sources of these elements are found in argillic alterated units. This causes enrichment of the groundwater with these ions. The present research was devoted to the investigation on the effects of alterated units on the water quality in Bidestan and Dezook qanats located in south of Mokhtaran plain (south of Birjand). Samples were taken from the qanats in July and November. The concentration of anions and cations, pH, and EC were measured. In November the concentrations of sulfate, calcium, and sodium in Dezook Qanat were 1257.6, 120, and 598 mg/L respectively while in the Bidestan Qanat in the same period, the concentrations were 1507.2, 170, and 662 mg/L In July, the concentrations of these ions were 1132.8, 226, and 437 mg/L in Dezook and 1392, 412, 287.5 mg/L in Bidestan Qanat. High concentrations of sulfate, calcium, and sodium in these qanats, cause undesirable taste of water which limits the use of it for drinking water and even agricultural use. It could be concluded that the alteration is responsible for the variation of these ions in the water.
