Abstract :
The sedimentary successions of Sarcheshmeh and Sanganeh Formations in the western part of Kopet Dagh Basin were investigated for calcareous nannofossils and stable isotopes (carbon and oxygen). According to calcareous nannofossils the age of the Sarcheshmeh Formation within the studied section is determined as Late Barremian- Early Aptian while the age of Sanganeh Formation is late Early Aptian- early Late Aptian. Carbon isotope curve has been investigated at the upper part of Sarcheshmeh Formation and throughout the thickness of Sanganeh Formation. Carbon isotope curve shows a decrease and subsequent increase within the interval. Moreover, nannoconids are rare along with these carbon isotope excursions and after these excursions increases in the abundance of nannoconids have been observed. These two events confirm the presence of the Oceanic Anoxic Event la at the studied section which is reported for the first time from Kopet-Dagh Basin and Iran.
