Abstract :

Forsterite refractoies and forsteritic binders were prepared using mining
wastes from Hajat Asbestos mine located near Nehbandan , south of Birjand ,Khorasan province.
Material characterization studies were performed on a composite sample including tailing from all stages of ore beneficiation and mining wastes . Dry magnetic separation was employed to reduce the iron content to about 4-5%Fe203.Next the sample was calcined at about 1200 C for 1-2 hours and sieved. THe 8 -to +170 mesh portion was used for making forsterite refractory. The v - mesh portion was used for preparing forsterite binder by reacting with dill. .euphoric acid and drying the product. Small amount (6-8%)of this binder and about 20%of dead burned magnesite was mixed with the forsterite raw material and after homogenization and shaping , the samples were fired al 1500-1600 C for 1-2 hours. Measurements of cold compressive strength, MOR, porosity and PCE were carried out on the prepared samples and found to be comparable with the results of magnesite refractory samples prepared under the same conditions.
