Abstract :
Due to the stratigraphic value of calcareous nannoplanktons in age determining of sedimentary beds, the Sarcheshmeh Formation in the Kopet-Dagh basin has been selected for biostratigraphy studies.
Sarcheshmeh Formation consists of sequence of grey marls and pencil-shales with subordinate Orbi:olina-bearing limestone intercalations, developed as a conformable cover of the Tirgan Formation throughout the upper Tirgan and is everywhere overlain by the Sanganeh Formation (Stocklin, 1971).
Calcareous nannofossils of Sarcheshmeh Formation was studied in 2 sections; Ateshgan and Amirabad.
The observed nannofossils in both sections are moderately preserved., and relatively diversed. As a result of this study 13 genera and 24 species of nannofossils were identified from Sarcheshmeh Formation in Ateshgan section, and 15 genera and 30 species from Amirabad section. Based on the obtained nannofossils, the age of this formation in Ateshgan section is Albian to Late Albian, corresponding to CC8-CC9 of Sissingh Zonation (1977), and Amirabad section is Albian in age, corresponding to CCS (Sissingh, 1977).
