Abstract :
This paper presents the results of investigations on radiolarian faunas from the Cretaceous ophiolitic melange of Sahiabad province in eastern Iran. The radiolarian assemblages ranging in age from Late Barremian to Cenomanian are here reported from red siliceous sedimentary rocks in two distinct areas (Eshkaftu area and Fanud area). In particular. Late Albian radiolarian assemblage) composed of about 10 species) was collected from red argillaceous cherts of the Eshkaftu area (North of Borjand). Two radiolarian assemblages have been yielded by red cherts in Fanud area (South of Birjand). Faunal assemblage I) composed of V species) is attributed to Late Barremian-Early Aptian and the faunal assemblage II (characterized by the occurrence of about!! species) is dated Albian-Cenomanian in Fanud area. This is the first finding of Early Cretaceous radiolarian in Sahiabad province (eastern part of Lut Block). All of these rocks were considered so far to be not older than Early Cretaceous. These faunal assemblages were documented from deep marine basin and can be related to Tethyan radiolarites (Babazadeh & De Wever, 2004).
