Abstract :
Rose diagrams of statistical analyses of 1868 fractures in east of Iran indicate that predominant trends of fractures are S45E in pre-Quaternary, and S 1 SE in the Quaternary sediments. The average direction of the main principle stress for pre-Quaternary and Quaternary period are therefore S 13E and S17W respectively which shows 30 clockwise rotation of the stress field. Another important conclusion based on rose diagrams and geomorphology of the faults, is the existence of fracture with E-W trends which were active in pre-Quaternary and are mostly inactive in Quaternary. In contrast, the fractures with NW-SE trend, which is the main trend of the region, have been active both in pre-Quaternary and Quaternary. Geometric and morphological properties of Quaternary faults in this area correlate with older faults and suggest continues deformation since that time. This fact is supported by truncation, offset, tilting and folding of Quaternary deposits near the faults. Some of pre-Quaternary faults are inactive in Quaternary. A few of these faults, in some area, have structural relationship with major Quaternary faults. Focal mechanism of most faults shows strike- slip movement with minor reverse component.
