Abstract :
The studies on the paleontology and petrography of the norhten Birjand sediments in Chahkand region indicates that the sediments are not flysch type but are composed of three litho and and eight sub-lithofacies which are being explained in the following. The main facies consist of a) silici clastic facies including siltstone sub facies and sand stone facies b) carbonate facies including micrite and dolomicrite sub- facies , and c) pyroclastic facies including crystal tuff, calcareous tuff and coarse grain tuff sub- facies. The above mentioned main facies have been labed as A, B and C and the sub facies as A1, A2,A3,B1,B2, C1,C2 and C3 in this research. The studies on the facies reveal that they have been formed in a back arc sedimentary region. The trace fossils of the vertebrates in the region under the investigation belong to pantodonts and dinocerata that recognized by Dr. Hasiotis from consas university which are two classes of extinct herbivores. Their most famous genera are Coryphodonts from order pantodonts, uintatheres and tithanitheres from order dinocerata which existed from the end Paleocen to the end of Eocene. Thus ,according to the present researchers investigations and Dr.HasiotisÂ’suggestions, the existance of perissodactyles in the region under the study formerly suggested by Mirzaie Ataabadi and Sarjeant is open to doubt (2000).
