Abstract :
Tirgan Formation (Barremian_Aptian) is exposed in the Kopet_Dagh Basin in NE Iran. This formation is mainly composed of oolitic limestone with interbeded of calcareous shale. According to this study, the Tirgan Formation in the eastern portion of the Kopet-Dagh basin (12 measured stratigraphic sections) consists of 4 carbonate lithofacies (11 subfacies) and 2 silisiclastic lithofacies (sandstone and shale). Based on the skeletal and nonskeletal grains and vertical and lateral relationship of these lithofacies it is interpreted that the carbonate sediments were deposited in marine carbonate platform (shelf) including open marine, barrier, lagoon and tidal flat subenvironments.
