Abstract :
Tirgan Formation (Barremian-Aptian), is made up of carbonate rocks in the Kopet-Dagh basin. This formation mainly consists of oolitic and orbitolin limestone that conformably overlies and underlies the Shourijeh and Sarcheshmeh Formations. Petrographical studies in southwest of Jowzak and Chamanbid area indicate that these sediments may have been deposited on a shallow ramp type carbonate platform and consists of 4 carbonate lithofacies associations (12 facieses). These lithofacies indicate open marine, shoal, lagoon and tidal flat depositional conditions. Sequence stratigraphy analysis of this formation led to identification of 4 third-order depositional sequences that are bounded by type 2 Sequence Boundaries.
Interpreted sea level change in the study area is relatively correlated with global curves during Barremian-Aptian time. Since, there is a difference in facies associations in the east and west of the basin, these data can be used in paleogeography of the Kopet-Dagh basin.
