Abstract :
In the Kopet Dagh Basin of northeast Iran, a thick Jurassic to Miocene succession was deposited on the Turan Plate and in local extensional depocentres of the Neo-Tethys Ocean, following closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. The Middle Jurassic Kashafrud Formation is more than 2 km thick, and commences with basal fluvio-manine boulder conglomerates that occupy valleys cut into the underlying bedrock. The bulk of the formation comprises a turbiditic succession of interbedded sandstone and mudstone packages with trace fossils and sparse amrnonites, capped by a thin oolitic carbonate.. Neogene collisional events deformed the strata during formation of the Kopet Dagh mountains.
