Abstract :
?Land subsidence is defined as a reduction in land elevation under the influence of changes which occurred or replaced under the land surface. One of the main reasons for this phenomenon is decline in the groundwater level due to over exploitation of groundwater resources. This paper deals with the land subsidence in the northwestern part of Mashhad plain due to over exploitation of Mashhad aquifer. During 40 years a drop of 60 m in groundwater level has been reported in some parts of the plain based on the data of piezometer wells. The main reason for this decline in the groundwater is agricultural and industrial development and also rapid population growth. Land subsidence has occurred in this area because of declining water level aquifers, geological and physical properties of the alluvial plain. In this part of the plain, problems of land subsidence can be seen as earth fissures and cracks, uplifting and curving of well casing.
