Abstract :
The Lower Paleocene siliciclastic rocks of Kopet-Dogh basin are called pestehligh Formation. The litho facies in this Formation varies from east to west, which differences are related to environmental conditions. In some regions Pestehlige Formation contains coarse grain conglomerates and in other regions is composed of fine grain sandstone and mudstone. The aims of this study are to interpret the depositional history as well as to evaluate the tectonic setting of provenance during deposition of the Pestehligh Formation, based on field and laboratory studies. The results of this study show that the Pestehligh Formation has been deposited in an active tectonic setting in fluvial depositional systems. We hope that this data can be use in reconstruction of the Kopet-Dogh basin paleogeography during Paleocene time.
