Abstract :
Because of stratigraphic value of calcareous nannoplanktons in determining the age of sedimentary layers, they have been used for biostratigraphic studies of Pesteligh Formation in Darband section. From petrologic view, Pesteligh Formation is consist of fine grain red sandstones and gray shales. 23 samples were taken from shaly layers and for the first time their calcareous nannofossils were studied. The result of taxonomic studies lead to identification of 15 family, 23 genera and 34 species. Because of first occurrence of the index species, the following biostratigraphyic zones have been suggested (after Martini, 1971): NP1 (Markalius inversus zone) and NP2 (Cruciplacolithus tenuis zone). On the basis of the stratigraphic importance of the identified biozones, the age of early Danian is suggested for Pesteligh Formation in Darband section.
