Abstract :
Prediction of groundwater rebound process in an excavation after cessation of mining activity and dewatering program is one of the most important problems associated with surface mining operation. A two-dimensional finite element numerical model called SEEP/W was used and slightly modified to model the groundwater rebound process in a deep pit excavated in an unconfined aquifer. This model takes into account saturated and unsaturated flow, hydraulic conductivity and water content as a function of pore-water pressure. This model simulated the water rebound process after 30, 300, 1250, 3500, 6000 and 9000 days ceasing of dewatering. This model predicts realistic results than analytical methods that can be used to control the quality of pit water. These results can be also used by environmental groups for developing a mine rehabilitation and environmental management plan for a deep pit.
