Abstract :
Historical background and instrumentally located earthquakes as well as the geological evidences, like active faults, all suggest that northeast Iran is one of the seismically active region Iranian plates. During the past centuries many destructive earthquakes occurred in the region and caused heavy damages and many human lost. The complexity of geological faults in the region also indicates that the region should have a complex mode of seismic activity.
Using the available geological information, air- photos and satellite images, a detailed fault of the region has been provided. Then, all the reported historical earthquakes were overlapped on the fault map. In the next step, using the location of instrumentally recorded earthquakes in the past hundred years, seismicity map of the region has been provided. Finally for the locally recorded earthquakes, the micro-seismicity map of the region was obtained and the fault plane solutions for strong earthquakes were determined. The results indicate that seismic activity in the region is very high. Several seismic gaps could be detected. For more details, extensive observations as well as field investigations are highly recommended. It is concluded that the occurrence of a large earthquakes in the region is not out of expectation.
