Abstract :
Increase in population and the need for extra water supply from aquifers causes water level decline around cities, leak of consumed water into sewage, leak of consumed water into aquifers, and finally water level rise under cities. Rise in water levels in urban centers leads to groundwater contamination, reduction in ground strength, problems for underground structures like subway train and liquefaction risk. Water level decline results in land subsidence. Presently, Mashad domestic water is supplied by Torogh and Kardeh dams in the west of the city with an annual rate of 180 Mm3. A large part of this water is discharged into the disposal wells which seeps into groundwater and causes both water level rise and pollution.
