Abstract : Bazd silica deposit is located to the east of Khorasan Razavi province and 12 Km to the west of? Torbat-e-Jam. This deposit was formed mainly by lower Devonian sandstone quartzite of Padeha formation. Based on field observations and petrographic studies quartz arenites are the most important part of sandstones in this area. X- Ray diffraction(XRD) analysises shows that the major phase is quartz. Muscovite, orthoclase, microcline and calcite are the minor phases in silica samples. Comparison of chemical composition of Bazd silica deposit with standard silica raw mterials used in glass industry shows that this mineral deposit? can be used as a raw material of production of? colored glasses and flat glasses without processing. Iron oxides as the most important impurities in silica samples have been reduced from nearly 0.25% to 0.015% in processed silica samples. The results obtained in this research show that Bazd silica samples can be used? for opal and pyrex tablewares after processing.
