Abstract :
Tirgan Formation (Lower Cretaceous) is made of carbonate rocks in the Kopet-Dagh basin. Reference section is in southwest of Jozak village in western part of the basin. This section conformably overlies the siliciclastic Shurijeh and underlies the Abderaz Formation with fault boundary. It consists mainly of Orbitolina limestone. Based on petrographical and morphological
studies, this formation divided two units. Lower unit consists of thin beded dolomite and dolomitic limestone. Gray thick bedded limestones of upper unit are Orbitolina calcilutite and calcarenite limestone. Biostratigraphical studies in this area show the present of two fossil assemblages from bentonic foraminifera and calcareous green algae. 8 genera and 16 species of
bentonic foraminifera and 2 genera of calcareous green algae were identified. These fossils assemblages suggest Barremian-Lower Aptian(beddulian) age for the Tirgan Formation at this section.
