Abstract :

Sewage system in most parts of Mashhad consists of disposal wells. This issue has led to an increase in the nitrate, chloride and sulfate concentration in southern Mashhad ground waters, crossing drinking water standard limits. In this regard, soil texture which varies from silt to gravel within the city boundaries plays an important role. In areas with coarse soil texture, the concentration of the above mentioned ions in groundwater is much higher than those with fine soil texture. Further, fine soil texture in the east of Mashhad, has resulted in a change in the course, a reduction in the flow velocity and consequently groundwater contamination. Nonetheless, the concentration of pollutants varies with seasonal water level fluctuation and in addition to soil texture depends on the residential density, hydrologic characteristics, geology of water bearing layers, climate and type of local industry.
