First of all we need to know what Geomatics is. Geomatics; the acronyms of Geo plus matics; includes sciences such as the mathematics of the earth ground, collecting, analysis & interpretation of data especially the ones related to the earth surface, as well as modeling, analysis and management of the ground source data. Geomatics, in other world is the knowledge & technology which concerns characteristics & structure of point data, methods of obtaining, organizing, classification, quality control, analysis, management, display & also basic requirement to put these data into use.

Geomatics has connections with a wide range of sciences by which an illustration of the physical world can be provided. For example: remote sensing, Geographical information systems, photogrammetry surveying, mapping, GPS (Global positioning system).

Geomatics is one of the techniques that has far too many applications within other sciences for example:

Environment, Geo-resources management, supervision on natural resources, sustainable development, off shore/ land management, civil planning & so on.

The history of Mashhad Geomatics team:

Regarding the necessity of employing the latest state _of_ the_ art instrument on scientific activities across the geological survey, the geomatics team initiated its job on 1998 employing & training a number of specialists, taking hardware & software utilities into account.

Its first business was digitized cartography & GIS then purchased Caris software & trained its staff over this year.

Receiving the software key (unlocking key) of remote sensing, Ermapper, the remote sensing division started its job on 1999.On 2002 the web site at the geological survey of northeast territory in the city of Mashhad, www.gsinet.ir & info @ gsinet.ir, came into existence, following the goal of giving proper information to the geo-researchers & making its capabilities know to the public. The primary cone of IT team was also established regarding the key role & expansion of IT; itself; on the summer of 2004. The main ambition of the team was to direct the information complex towards the collecting, classification, organizing & systematic reservation of such information are at the chief achievements of team.
