Abstract :

The Lower Permian rocks of the Alborz region (Jolfa, Abyeik, Bibi Shahrbanu, Amol, Mighan and Ghaznavi) were studied to define their facies and depositional environments. The Lower Permian rocks of the Alborz area are composed of thick clastic (conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and shales) and carbonate (Iimetstone) facies. In some places (Amol) about 365 meters of sediments have been deposited during Asselian to Sakmarian time.
The Lower Permian rocks of the Alborz region are charactereized by the clastic sediments of the Dorud Formation. Facies analysis of more than 100 thin sections and 15 polished samples led to the recognition of several dlastic facies. The clastic rocks of the Dorud Formation (units 1 and 3) were deposited in a continental (meandering river) and transitional (deltaic and beach) environments.
