Quarterly

Study of fossil fishes from Geirud Formation and recognition of the genus Rhinodipterus

Writers : Dashtban,H.
Refference : Geosciences Scientific Quarterly Journal,No.:20,P.:48

Abstract :

Among the Upper Devonian fish remains collected from central Alborz, several Dipnoi tooth plates have been recognized for the first time, in the Geirud Formation. ï‚¡
In comparison with the specimens found from Kerman region (Janvier 1981), much similarities can be observed between the specimens of two areas, whereas their ages are somewhat different. Kerman specimens belong to the lower- middle Frasnian, while the specimens from the Alborz are assigned to lower to? upper Famennian strata.
In addition, their differences with the world index genera and species could be regarded as new endemic genus or species locally occurring in a shallow and tropical sea, around central Alborz as well as Kerman areas during Late Devonian times.
 Rhinodipiterus is a genus of world wide distribution.
