• Projection of Triassic, Permian, and Crboniferous Isopach Trends from Arabia Across the Persian Gulf into Iran, and Proposed Sinistral Displacement of Permian Isopachs along the main Zagros Fault

Abstract :
Isopach trends (thins and thicks) hays been compiled for the TIISUIC, Upper Permian Khuff Formation (and equivalents) and Permo-Carboniferous clastics throughout most of the I!ddle East (FIgurs 1). Isopach trends In the 4Axablan Peninsula can be projected across the Persian Gulf Into coastal Iran with some confkfsnce. Across the main Zagros Fault or Zagros Suture a different kind of Isopach pattem Is observed, Inconsistent with Isopach trends on the Persian Gulf elde of the fault zone.
In a palinspastic reconstruction, If about 465 Kflometers of sinistral offset of the Perm Ian along the Main Zagros Fault Is assumed, then Psrmlan sediments on both sldes of the fault can be shown to be compatible In thickness and facles trends. This Inferred left- lateral offset Is counter to the apparent dIrection of late Tertiary to Recent stilke slip offset as generally accepted (Beydoun, 1989, and many others).
