Abstract :
Stratigraphical and Paleontological evidence show that major parts of Iran were subjected to an important Mid.Klmmerian tectonic event:as yet not properly recongnizd by many geoIogists. This
Mid-Kimmerian event occurs at the boundary between two major sedimentary cycles separating an earlier post.
Early Kimmerian molassic cycle of essentially continental/deltaic/paralic nature (Shemshak Formation:Upper Triassic to early Doger) from a shallow marine Carbonate environment of deposition that lasted from the Dogger to the end of the Maim. Evidence for a Mid-Kimmerian movement in many parts of lran, include tectonic uplift accompanied by denudational interval, paraconformity, unconformity, igneous activites and metamprphism.Paleontological evidence dates the Mid-Kimmerian event to the Lower-Middle Bathonian in central Iran while in northern Iran it has been given a post Lower Bajocian- pre Upper Bajocian age, thus indicating that it was not contemporaneous throughout Iran.
The less known Mid-Kimmerian is situated between the long recognized important Early and Late Klmmerian orogenies.ln Iran, the Early Kimmeran event accurred during the Midàle Triassic;causing the break up of the Permo-Scythian Platform and the initial opening of the neotethys. This resulted in considerable paleogeographical changes, accompanied by folding, magmatic intrusions and metamorphism. The Late Kimmerian Orogeny occurred at the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary, and it was previously thought that this orogeny was accompanied by folding (Central Iran) and had given rise to paraconformity (Alborz.Kopeh Dagh and Zagros ranges), magmatic emplacement and metamorphism; but it is now beleived that all these orogenic phenomena must be associated with the Mid-Kimmerian event.
This Late Kimmerian orogeny gave rise to widespread molassic red beds during the Lower Cretaceous
and is not to be confused with, the also less Known Nevadan event, which in Iran has been recognized by the present author, as a separate phase which has a post Oxfordian-Pre basal Cretaceous age.
Iranian geological literature has often confused this intra-Bathonian tectonic event with the Late Kimmerian phase.Due to the fact that this intra Bathonian/intra Bajocian event occurs within the Kimmerian orogenic cycle, it is hereby proposed to call this event as the "Mid-Kimmerian event".
