Abstract :
The study area is situated in North Khorasan province in North east of Iran. Proposed Amand dam will be built on the Amand river, 60 km west of Ashkhaneh city, about 500 m North east of Garmab village (Longitude 560, 20 and latitude 3T, 45). It will be used for flow control and water storage for irrigation project. Amand dam will be 46 m high from river bed with a crest length of 400 m and a total storage capacity of 14 million m3. This study explains engineering geological assessment for sate design of the proposed Amand dam. The geotechnical investigations have been carried out at the project site and in the laboratory. Various laboratory and in situ tests were performed to assess the rock mass properties. The proposed dam arid reservoir site is located on shale and many shale of the Sarcheshmeh Formation of the Lower Cretaceous age and on Quaternary deposits. The rock mass of the darn site were classified by RMR, Q and GSI methods. Evaluation of shale and many shale for rock mass classification, indicated that the rock mass are in poor quality due to RMR and Q values. The Hoek- Brown failure criterion was used to estimate in situ rock mass strength. Finally, for treatment and improvement of seepage and quality of rock mass and quaternary deposits, curtain grouting and cut-off wall was recommended.
