Abstract :

Noting the stratigraphical improtante of calcareous nannofossils in the ascertaning of the ages of deposit sequences of the second period espacially Upper Cretaceous Abtalkh Formation deposits in the type section, were investigated. This section, is in the eastern part of the Mashhad- Sarakhs road, in the Mozdoran bend, and includes 813 meter of calcareous shale greyish blue in color with secondary layers of Marl All together in this study, 50 samples of the above mentioned deposits were prepared. After this, 19 families, 36 genues, 64 species and 3 sub species, using LM & SEM, were identified. On this basis ،6species of the presence of the first typical species and its accompanying grouped fossils, foui biozones in the deposit sequences of the mentioned section ، were(1977) determined. It can be, correlated with Sissingh's Zonation Calcul ithus,Zon eQuadru mobscu rus ZoneCeratolitho, ides,sissin ghii ZoneQuad, rurntrifidu m Zone aculeus On the basis of the stratigraphical importance of the identified hiozonation the age of the Upper Santonian_ Upper Carnpanian for Abtalkh Formation in the type section, is suggested.
