Abstract :

An engineering geological map is the best way to depict the natural environment for engineering purposes. An engineering geological map is a type of geological map which provides a generalized representation of all those components of geological environment of significance in land-use planning and in design, construction and maintenance as applied to civil and mining engineering. Purpose of these maps has been to provide information about characteristics of the natural environment for planning land use and engineering structures of all kinds. Problems resulting from unfavorable engineering geological conditions have confirmed that engineering geological mapping is a fundamental prerequisite for planning. In accordance with these concepts, engineering geological mapping was carried out, in the south of Mashhad, located in northeastern Iran, at a scale of 1:10.000 to characterize basic engineering geological Units and provide engineering geological information as an aid in planning land. The Mashhad city located in the province of khorasanne Razavi, between longitudes 58 20 and 60 8 and latitudes 35 40 and 36 3. In this study, five basic maps were produced in Geographical Information System (GIS) drawing: geology map, slope map, water resources, engineering geological zoning and distribution of geological-geotechnical hazards based on information collected through field and laboratory investigations. Ten engineering geological units were identified on the engineering geological zoning map. Engineering geological zoning was carried out by assessing four main attribute groups: genesis, texture of unconsolidated materials, lithologies and slope classes. The units were analyzed in terms of natural susceptibility hazards (slope instability, flooding, settlements, water erosion and earthquake) and suitability for foundation and excavation conditions, based on specific attribute checklists.
