Abstract :
With increasing industrialization and technical development, economical and population growth, the quantity of waste has increased immensely in big cities. One form of waste sources is hospital. These kinds of special waste must be disposed of in special ways. The best method for hospital waste disposal is incineration that follows with landfiling. The World Health Organization (WHO) proposed the waste disposal in ground if we can't use the incineration because of the economic and engineering reasons.
Hospital and domestic wastes in the Mashhad city is replacement in the landfill in Koodbar area, at 5 kilometers of Mashhad - Neyshabour road. Selection of a landfill site for a particular waste involves a consideration of economic and special factors, as well as geological and hydrogeological conditions. Therefore correct siting landfill is important stage in disposal waste management system.
Effective factors in siting landfill contain: litology, morphology, net road, population centers, hydrological condition, assessing borrow source, etc. Analysis of this information involve consuming time and cost. Geographical Information System (GIS) able to analysis more information with little time and cost. In this research for site selection using GIS and ArcView 3.3 sofiware. Two models such as Boolean and Index Overlay models were used.
In Boolean model weighting of each unit of maps is base on binary logic, I (suitable) or 0 (unsuitable). Information layers was combined by Boolean AND operator. The final map also contains two suitable and unsuitable classes. The advantage of this model is easy for user. Index Overlay model allows for a more flexible combination maps than it is possible with Boolean logic combination operation alone. After analysis the data with GIS, two suitable sites were selected around the Mashhad city. Field study focused on these two selected site.
The site I is located 30 kilometers Northeast of Mashhad in Hendelabad and Abeshky area, and site 2 is located 17 kilometers Southeast of Mashhad in Tangalshour area. Both sites underlain geologically by marlstone with badland morphology.
